Solid gold vs. plated jewellery
All ATTIC collection pieces are made from solid 14k yellow gold. We chose to work with solid karat gold for it’s longevity and beautiful wear. The properties of 14k mean that the colour of your jewellery will never change, that surface finishes can be reapplied or polished, and that your piece can be repaired along the way, or recycled at the end of its life.
When shopping for gold jewellery, it’s important to ask if it’s solid karat gold, gold plated, or gold filled. There is a big distinction between these materials, which will make a huge difference in how well your jewellery will wear over the years.
Gold plating is the chemical process of depositing a micron-thin layer of gold to the surface of another metal. Often this underlying material is a base metal such as brass, bronze, or silver (vermeil). We’ve all had the experience of buying a less expensive piece of jewellery only to find it reveals a different colour beneath the surface, or sometimes leaves your skin discolored.
With so many companies making “gold jewellery”, a little research will go a long way to ensure the piece you are purchasing will be one you own and wear for years.
