Fine gold is a noble metal, a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. This precious metal melts at 1064°C or 1947°F .
Gold from space
Scientists believe that gold originated from outer space, formed by the collision of supernova neutron stars that reached Earth via asteroids during its early formation.
Tonnes of gold
The World Gold Council estimates that around 216,265 tonnes of gold have been unearthed, around two thirds of which have been recovered since the 1950s.
